In the presentation and use of the intellectual property and fora included in this unique extranet facility BPF is intent that the highest ethical standards are maintained. In particular companies are reminded of their duty to comply with the Competition Act of 1998, which came into force on 1^st March 2000. The Office of Fair Trading were given wide ranging investigative powers to enforce the Act and can fine businesses up to 10% of UK turnover for a maximum of 3 years. Prohibitions cover many types of formal and informal agreements and abuse of a dominant position in the market.

A particular focus is placed on price fixing, unfair pricing, and the existence of cartels. There are particular issues affecting the exchanging of information in trade associations and the BPF has a Competition Act Compliance Manual which its staff and members are expected to observe.
